Within 50-years of the Denny party's arrival in Seattle, the city undertook several massive projects which permanently changed the topography of the city.  Between 1898 and 1930, Seattle completed perhaps the most audacious engineering change by eliminatingDenny Hill at the north end of downtown.  By the end of the project, Seattleites had washed and scraped more than 11 cubic million yards of Denny Hill, reducing the previously 240-foot-high mound to a flat landscape. Hike Coal Creek’s Mining History with Judy Bentley

Judy Bentley will lead a hike along the Coal Creek Trail to the center of 19th century mining in old Newcastle.  Hike railroad grades and trails along the route of the Seattle and Walla Walla Railroad and see the terrain of mining--black holes in the earth, coal  timbers in the creek, locomotive turntable remains, and more.  The hike will be about 4 miles with shuttles between the beginning and end of the trail, with a few modest ups and downs.…
