Trails and Treaties in the Pacific Northwest: Time for Reconsiderations 2nd Annual Eastside Conference, Walla Walla, October 7 & 8, 2005

A Call for Presentations

The goal of the Pacific Northwest Historians Guild is to encourage a diverse group of presentations exploring the history leading up to the treaties of 1855. We seek an exploration of the various consequences and repercussions of trail and treaty events including present day commemorations.

The Guild encourages the work of both independent and university-affiliated historians, offering this conference as a forum where all can meet. Presentation topics may include environmental and economic studies of the area, exploration of little-known figures in our trail and treaty histories, reconsideration of pivotal events and people, discussion of period life ways, political analyses, as well as a focus on new questions. Panels or presentations including representatives from regional tribes are especially encouraged. Film, poetry, or other media presentations are also encouraged; we are exploring producing a publication and video to document the information presented.

Because this is the 150th year since the signing of the Treaties of 1855, it becomes especially important to present as many viewpoints as possible. History not transmitted to coming generations for their interpretations becomes lost. Students of all levels will benefit, through discussion, from our members' wealth of knowledge.

Please submit proposals for review by the Conference Program Committee, chaired by Fort Walla Walla Museum by July 20, 2005. Proposals should include a title and a 150 to 200 word description. Presentations that include handouts for classroom teachers are particularly appreciated. For more information please contact Mary Ann McKinney, Treaty Conference Program Coordinator at maryann@fortwallawallamuseum.org. The mailing address is Fort Walla Walla Museum, 755 Myra Road, Walla Walla, WA 99362

October in Walla Walla can be magical. The community retains much of its flavor from pioneer days, blending the historic nicely with its modern, world-class wine industry. A full range of accommodations is available and your stay should prove memorable.
