Abstract: Olympia's Pioneer Chinese Communityby Edward Echtle (Read about this author in the Member directory.)
Like most American settlements in the Puget Sound region in the nineteenth
century, Olympia was home to a contingent of Chinese sojourners. Olympia's
Chinese community provided an indispensable labor resource that the dominant community understood as necessary, although their contributions were seldom acknowledged. This paper examines the Chinese immigrant community and the interdependent nature of the relationship to the dominant community in early Olympia.
